Westminster and Lovett, the top-ranked teams in Class A-AAAAA, reaffirmed their status as two of the state’s best boys teams regardless of classification this week, taking wins over top-10 AAAAAA teams.

No. 1 Westminster scraped past Roswell (No. 4, AAAAAA), 9-8, on Thursday, and No. 2 Lovett knocked off Lassiter (No. 7, AAAAAA), 14-4, earlier in the week.

Neither game should be considered an upset. Both Westminster and Lovett have been fixtures near the top of Class A-AAAAA in recent years. The Wolves have four state championships, the most recent coming in 2013, and the Lions were the state runner-up last year.

More recently, Westminster (12-1) is ranked No. 7 in the South by LaxMagazine.com and the Wolves’ only loss this season came against Boy Latin (Md.), the No. 5 team in the country. Meanwhile, the Lions (9-3), own a victory of top-ranked AAAAAA team Johns Creek, and their only loss to a Georgia team came by one point against Centennial (No. 2, AAAAAA).

Neither team has another game on the schedule until they meet April 10 in what could be a preview of the Class A-AAAAA state title game – assuming both teams win their respective areas.

About that…

For a team that’s undefeated and ranked No. 3 in their classification, Allatoona seems to be flying under the radar a bit. The Buccaneers (10-0) don’t play the high-profile schedule with elite out-of-state competition that some of the other top teams in Georgia do, but they do have a win over Harrison (No. 9, Class AAAAAA) in the season opener to their credit and they’ve won each game since by an average margin of 15 goals per game.

They appear to be biggest threat to interrupt Westminster’s march toward an unbeaten run in Area 2, and their game on April 25 will likely decide the area title.

Elsewhere in A-AAAAA…

Marist is marching on. With Wednesday's 8-4 win over No. 9 St. Pius, the 10th-ranked War Eagles have now won six straight after dropping back-to-back overtime heartbreakers in mid-March.

Lovett is up next, though still nearly two weeks away (April 14). If the War Eagles are to pull the upset, expect it to be because of their defense. They’ve given up more than six goals only once this season and haven’t yielded double digits to any opponent.

Four of the six victims of their current losing streak carry winning records, but only one managed to score more than four goals against the War Eagles.
