The first day of the lacrosse state playoffs passed Tuesday without any grand surprises. The Class A-AAAAA boys and Class AAAAAA girls played their first-round match-ups, and while some higher seeds fell, few could be called upsets.
In girls action, Walton and Mill Creek were the only lower-seeded teams to advance, and both were ranked higher than their opponents in the state rankings. Walton, the No. 3 seed in a highly competitive Area 2, has ranked in the state’s top five for much of the season and defeated sixth-ranked Northview, 20-10, on Tuesday.
Mill Creek slid to a No. 3 seed in Area 4 after a double overtime loss to Collins Hill late in the season, but went on the road and escaped with a 13-11 win over Kennesaw Mountain in the first round.
McIntosh’s 13-6 win over St. Pius was an attention-grabber in Class A-AAAAA boys play, where four games featured top-10 matchups. The Golden Lions were the Area 4 champs and ranked in the state’s top five, but McIntosh wasn’t far behind and the Chiefs proved they were worthy of their top-10 ranking despite a spate of April losses that left them as the No. 4 seed in Area 1.
The Class AAAAAA boys and Class A-AAAAA girls will play their first-round games Wednesday with the second round set for Saturday.
The second round for the Class AAAAAA girls and A-AAAAA boys will be played Friday.
