Greenbrier, North Atlanta end slumps; Lithia Springs, Apalachee hope to join them soon
Six Class AAAAA teams went 0-10 in the 2013 season. Two of those – Greenbrier and North Atlanta – already have victories this season to put their long losing streaks to an end. Here’s a look at the six winless teams from last season and where they stand:
*Greenbrier: The Wolfpack opened the season with a 34-0 victory against Harlem two weekends ago to snap a 10-game losing streak. Greenbrier begins play in 2-AAAAA this week against Warner Robins, which was ranked seventh in AAAAA until a 19-0 loss to Peach County in its opener last week. Greenbrier hasn't won more than two region games in a season since going 3-6 in 2007.
*North Atlanta: The Warriors ended an 11-game losing streak last week with a 22-6 victory against KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, which is playing its first full varsity season. North Atlanta has not had a winning season since going 7-3 in 2010. The Warriors face non-region opponents River Ridge and Dalton before opening play in 7-AAAAA Division B against Riverwood on Sept. 19.
*Lithia Springs: The Lions' losing streak reached 14 games when they lost to Landmark Christian 48-36 last week. This week's game against Chapel Hill matches the only two teams in Region 5-AAAAA that haven't won at least once this year. That game is followed by a rugged stretch that includes games against Allatoona, Alexander, Hiram, Villa Rica and East Paulding.
*Apalachee: The Wildcats lost to Woodland-Stockbridge 48-26 in their opener last week to extend their losing streak to 11 games. Apalachee went 12-1 and reached the quarterfinals in 2009 and were 6-4, 4-6 and 5-5 the next three seasons before taking a major step back. The Wildcats open Region 8-AAAAA play this week at Winder-Barrow, which is 6-55 since the start of the 2008 season.
*Windsor Forest: The Knights are playing in Class AAAA this season after finishing 0-10 in Region 3-AAAAA last year. Windsor Forest lost to Beach 20-0 last week to extend its losing streak to 14 games. The Knights' next two opponents – Savannah and Groves – went 1-9 in 2013. And if they can't get a win in those, there's always the season finale against first-year program New Hampstead.
*Mount Zion-Jonesboro: Like Windsor Forest, the Bulldogs are also playing in Class AAAA this season. Mount Zion lost to Morrow 27-24 last week to extend its losing streak to 12 games. Mount Zion's best chance for a victory might come against Spalding on Oct. 30. Every other team on the Bulldogs' schedule won at least four games or reached the playoffs last season.
