The first annual Greenway Trojan Invitational enters the calendar with plenty of promise.
The tournament is sponsored by Greenway Health (a sponsor of PGA champion Jason Dufner) and will be the only invitation-only, Junior Golf Scoreboard-ranked event in the state.
Players will compete in a 36-hole format, with the first 18 being played on Monday and the next round being played on March 30. All competition will be played at Sunset Hills in Carrollton. In addition to team and medalist cups, a limited edition canvas print from local artist Mandy Roach will also go to the winner.
The eight-team field includes a cast of perennial contenders: Carrollton, Darlington, Holy Innocents’, LaGrange, Newnan, Northgate, Spalding and Walton.
Gainesville to defend Big Red Shootout title
Gainesville will defend its title in the Big Red Shootout on Monday at the Chattahoochee Golf Club.
The medalist battle could come down to Lambert’s Brett Barron, who has signed with Georgia Southern, and Gainesville’s Spencer Ralson, who has committed to Georgia.
Other teams in the field include Lovett, Blessed Trinity, Riverwood, Grayson, Elbert County, North Hall, Buford, South Forsyth, Habersham Central, Jackson County, White County and Mill Creek.
The one-day even features a modified Stableford format.
Woodland debuts Wolfpack Invitational
The inaugural Wolfpack Invitational will be hosted by Woodland High School on Saturday at Crystal Lake Country Club in Hampton.
“This is the first year, but I hope to make it an annual event,” said Woodland coach Brandon Kunz.
Boys teams in the field include reigning Class AAAAAA champion Peachtree Ridge, Starr’s Mill, Luella, Union Grove, Pike County, Chattahoochee and Woodland. Girls teams are Chattahoochee, Starr’s Mill, Luella, Pike County, Union Grove and Woodland.
Field of 70 for Georgia Peach
The annual Georgia Peach Lee Murray Invitational will be played Saturday at Hard Labor Creek in Rutledge. Seventy girls will compete in the tournament as individuals; there is no team competition.
There are five flights in the event. Contestants in the two top flights will play 18 holes, those in the next two flights will play nine holes, those in the last flight will play a four-player scramble.
Chateau Elan hosts West Hall Invitational
A field of 27 girls team and 19 boys teams will compete in the West Hall Invitational on Saturday at Chateau Elan. The Girls will compete on the Chateau course, with the boys competing on the Woodlands course.
The Cambridge girls return to defend their championship. Johns Creek won last year’s event, but did not return this spring.
There are 48 boys in the field who average 80 or better and 34 girls who average 85 or lower, meaning the tournament should be very competitive.
Harrison wins North Georgia Invitational
Luke Schniederjans shot a 1-under 143 to win the North Georgia Invitational, which was contested over two weeks to lead Harrison to a seven-shot win. The first round was played at Barnsley Gardens, the second round at The Farm.
Peachtree Ridge finished in second place, with senior Charles Huntzinger shooting a 142 to lead all individuals.
Tennis
Westminster girls start fast
The Westminster girls tennis team is having little trouble moving up in classification. The Wildcats, winners of two straight Class AA titles, is playing on the Class AAA level this year. But coach Scoot Dimon’s team is off to a 4-1 start.
“The competition is AAA is very strong, so we have our work cut out for us,” Dimon said. “Blessed Trinity (winner of six straight state championships) will be great competition for us for sure.”
Westminster has three strong singles players in Carol Elizabeth Kerman, Grace Staes and Becca Stewart. Dimon said there are 10 talented girls who are available to make up the two doubles teams.

Meadowcreek’s boys are off to a surprising 4-0 start after wins over Mountain View and Duluth. Angel Lierena and Jhon Lieerena in singles and the doubles teams of Denny Vuong and DeAndre Bellows and Jonathan Reid and Kavin Dang are off to a good start. ...
