No. 5 Mill Creek (8-0, 5-0) and No. 9 Peachtree Ridge (6-2, 5-0) emerged as the main contenders in Region 7 on Friday in the 10th weekend of Georgia high school football.
Mill Creek beat Collins Hill 42-17, as Cameron Turley passed for 290 yards and three touchdowns, while Peachtree Ridge beat No. 8 Norcross 31-0, the Lions’ sixth straight victory, each while allowing seven points or less.
Mill Creek and Peachtree Ridge will play on Nov. 6. They've won one region title between them. That came from Peachtree Ridge in 2008.
Several other teams moved closer to region titles. Here are some highlights from AAAAAA.
-No. 2 Grayson (9-0, 7-0) clinched Region 8 with a 40-0 victory over Dacula, a team that upset Grayson last season. Grayson led 40-0 at halftime. In the upset of the night, Shiloh beat Parkview 26-21. Shiloh entered 0-7 while Parkview (5-3, 3-3) appeared to have an inside track on the playoffs in R8.
-Lambert (7-1, 7-0) beat West Forsyth (5-3, 5-2) 35-31, scoring the winning touchdown with 2:20 left, and remains the only unbeaten team in region play for Region 6 Lambert, a 6-year-old Forsyth County school that has never won a region title, faces South Forsyth (7-1, 6-1) on Nov. 6 for what might decide the championship.
-Westlake (6-2, 4-1) put itself back in contention to defend its Region 3 title with a 36-35 overtime victory over Hughes (4-4, 4-1), which entered as the region leader. Those two plus Newnan (6-2, 4-1) and East Coweta (6-2, 4-1) are now tied at the top, but Westlake has the easiest remaining schedule among them.
-Lovejoy, which was staring at its first losing season since 2009, is suddenly one victory from the region title in Region 2 after beating Newton 20-16. Lovejoy (4-4, 3-0) scored the game-winner on a 26-yard pass with 1:12 left. Lovejoy can clinch the title with a victory over Tucker (5-3, 2-1) next week at Adams Stadium. Newton fell to 6-2, 2-1.
-McEachern (R4) and Roswell (R5) continue to roll in their region. Hillgrove (R4) had a big victory over Harrison and might be McEachern's only threat.
-Region 1 was off.
