Earlier this week a national scouting organization named Elbert County’s Mecole Hardman as the No. 1 prospect in the country. He showed why on Friday night. The senior carried 26 times for 201 yards and scored five touchdowns, including the game-winner as time expired, in a 44-38 win at Westminster.
Hardman scored on runs of 8, 8, 9, 2 and 2 yards and also scored on four two-point conversion runs. He completed 5 of 14 passes for 100 yards.
Hardman helped bring the No. 4-ranked Blue Devils (3-0) back from a 24-6 halftime deficit on the road. He set up the dramatic score by completing a pass to Tra Barnett, who scrambled to the 2 with only two seconds remaining.
Elbert scored 32 unanswered points and led 38-24 when Westminster (1-2) tied it in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard run by Zay Malcome and a 62-yard punt return by Malcome.
Westside knocks of West Laurens:
Westside-Macon entered the rankings at No. 8 a week ago and could move up after its 27-24 win over Class AAAA No.4 West Laurens.
Quarterback Savion Knowlton made the difference for the Seminoles (3-0). He ran for a 25 yard touchdown and threw three touchdown passes, a 35-yarder to Gerimie Mitchell, a 15-yarder and a 2-yarder to Steve Dolphus.
Three for McGee in Peach victory
: Tyrique McGhee ran for three touchdowns to help No. 7 Peach County (2-1) turn back Southwest Macon 35-12. McGhee scored on runs of 1, 10 and 25 yards to help the Trojans win their Region 2-AAA opener.
Peach County also scored on an 8-yard run by James Jackson and a 59-yard interception return by Otha Redding.
Southwest scored on a 1-yard run by Justin Slocum and a 50-yard pass from Slocum to Markess Burton.
No. 9 Central rolls along
: Central Carroll's Damarious Owensby carried 10 times for 232 yards and two touchdowns to help the No. 9 Lions to a 48-7 win over Hardaway.
Senior Lamar Daniel was all over the place. The senior caught a 67-yard touchdown pass, blocked a punt and returned it for a 67-yard touchdown and spearheaded the defense.
BT's Shelton-Davis Show gets big ratings
: The team of Milton Shelton and Garrett Dupuis set the tone for No. 2 Blessed Trinity's mighty running attack in a 33-7 win over Creekview. Shelton ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns and Dupuis ran for 130 yards, as the Titans improved to 3-0
Blessed Trinity quarterback Conor Davis threw for 130 yards, hitting 9 of 15 passes, and Brooks Hosea kicked four field goals.
Ba-boom for Calhoun
: The No. 1 Yellow Jackets led 54-0 at halftime when the game was called because of heavy rain and lightning. Calhoun (3-0) played its first team in the first quarter and the backups in the second period.
Quarterback Kaelan Riley ran for a 10-yard touchdown and threw two touchdown passes, a 17-yarder to Landon Rice and a 31-yarder to Malik Lawrence. Keenan Dixon ran for two touchdowns and Jess Ralston and Gauge Giddens got the other scores.
Dragons take rivalry win
: No. 3 Jefferson (4-0) overwhelmed rival Commerce 34-10, with sophomore Caleb Wood rushing for 183 yards and three touchdowns. Darrian Hill added 60 yards and one touchdown run.
Bryce Moore set up two of the scores with long pass completions. Moore was 7-for-14 for 118 yards and a touchdown to Kaleb Cooley.
Commerce has defeated its oldest rival in eight of the last nine meetings.
Hart County takes a hit:
The Hart County Bulldogs gave up three touchdowns in the first quarter, which set the pace in a 49-14 loss to Class AAAA No. 8 Thomson. Hart County (2-1) drove for a touchdown on its first possession of the second half, with Robert Allen Jr. hitting Trey Stowers for a 33-yard touchdown. Backup quarterback O'Neal Anderson found Jalen Brown for a late touchdown.
