GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We’ll report from a different head coach each day.
Matt Burleson, Telfair County
1. Who is/was the most influential person in your coaching career? "My father, Gene Burleson, also a high school coach of 37 years. He taught me the value of hard work and how to do things the right way on and off the field. One of the best men and coaches I've ever been around. Now recently deceased after a long bout with cancer, he showed me how to keep fighting no matter what life throws at you."
2. Who is the best Georgia player you ever faced? "Two players – Eric Berry 2006 and Nick Marshall 2010. Both young men were unbelievable athletes that could take over a game at any point."
3. What is the best team you ever faced as a coach? "Wilcox County 2010."
4. If you were Gary Phillips, the new head of the GHSA, what would be the first rule that you would try to change? "Continue working the kinks out of the power-ranking systems for Class A."
