Four Questions with Camden County coach Welton Coffey

GHSF Daily asked Georgia head coaches to answer these four questions. We'll report from a different head coach each day.
Welton Coffey, Camden County
1. What is the most memorable game you've been a part of as a player or coach? "As a player, the 1984-85 season William M. Raines Vikings vs. Jean Ribault Trojans, Jacksonville, Fla., in the Gator Bowl my senior year. Well over 10,000 attended the Northwest Classic. One of the biggest rivalry games in the state of Florida. As a coach, I have been blessed to be a part of many memorable games; however, it would be the 2009 Lowndes vs. Camden second-round playoff game. Camden won. Holding the ball for eight minutes in the fourth quarter to end the game was pretty amazing considering our very talented opponent."
2. Which high school coach would you want your son to play for, and why? "There are many men that I believe are good coaches, but more importantly are good men - Frank Stephens [Ware County], Jeff Herron [Prince Avenue Christian], Jimmy Dorsey [athletics director at McEachern], Jason Tone [Worth County], Jon Lindsay [East Paulding], Maurice Freeman [Brooks County], Byron Love [Westlake]. I watch these men with their families as well as their players. I believe I know what is in their hearts."
3. What is your pet peeve as a coach or favorite saying/motto? "Pet peeve: Selfishness and undisciplined, on and off the field. Motto: Hebrews 12:11 'For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.'"
4. Which GHSA policy or high school football rule would you most like to see changed? "The new contact rule. I am for the safety of the student-athletes in all sports; however, football is what it is. We have to trust coaches to be the professionals that they are. They love their players, and I am sure that they will not do anything to jeopardize the health and safety of any of them. This a violent collision sport. That is the essence of this game. You cannot tame it. You teach the proper techniques, and players apply what they have been taught."
