While many of the state’s top basketball prospects play in the higher classifications, there are still many who compete in Class AAA. There are pockets where basketball flourishes in Georgia that includes some of the mid-sized schools that participate in AAA, particularly the Savannah and Augusta areas.
Here are five of the state’s top prospects/players who compete in Class AAA basketball:
Tookie Brown, Morgan County: Brown (5-11, 170) is considered a point guard because of his ability to distribute the ball and run the offense. But a year ago Brown averaged nearly 27 points and helped the Bulldogs win their first state championship, so his ability to score from the outside is unequalled. Brown signed early with Mississippi State after receiving interest from many others, including Georgia, Virginiaa, Clemson and Miami.
Jashawn Brooks, Laney: The 6-foot-4, 175-pound guard is comfortable running the offense. He has the ability to create shots for himself and others. Brooks has good range as a shooter. He averaged 15 points, 2.7 rebounds and 2.3 steals a year ago. He is being recruited by mid-majors like Kennesaw State, UNC Wilmington, Appalachian State, Chattanooga and Jacksonville.
Antwan Maxwell, Johnson Savannah: The 6-foot-8 small forward averaged 10.1 points and 7.5 rebounds as a junior. Maxwell is a solid ball handler and offers a good outside presence for a big man. Maxwell has signed with Charleston Southern. He also considered South Carolina State, George Mason, American and LIU Brooklyn.
Malik Benlevi, Jenkins: A 6-foot-6 combo guard, Benlevi averaged 13.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, two steals and 1.5 assists last year in helping Jenkins win a region championship and reach the Final Four in Class AAAAA. Benlevi signed with Georgia State after a visit in September. He also considered Kennesaw State and South Carolina State.
Darius Williams, Josey: The 6-foot guard is captain is instant offense. He averaged 31.3 points last year and has scored 55 points in the first two games this season. Williams has excellent shooting range and has the quickness to create turnovers. Among the schools recruiting Williams are Samford, Northern Kentucky and Western Kentucky.
