It seems like we say this every year, but the season has flown by. In fact, for a handful of teams across the state, the regular season ends this Friday night.
Five AA teams will complete their regular seasons this week, with four of those having plenty at stake.
Brooks County
The Trojans need a win over visiting Thomasville to force a potential three-way tie in Region 1. Thomasville, on the other hand, can clinch the region championship with a win. A Brooks County loss would almost certainly banish the Trojans to third place -- Fitzgerald holds the head-to-head tiebreaker -- and a trip to No. 4 Benedictine in the first round of the playoffs.
Dublin
After falling to Swainsboro last week, the Fighting Irish are fighting for a playoff spot as they host region-leading Screven County on Friday. A loss wouldn't eliminate Dublin from the playoff hunt, but a win would remove all the guesswork and give the Irish some needed momentum headed into the postseason.
Lovett
The defending state champion Lions haven't lost a region game since the end of the 2011 season, a streak of 14 straight wins. A win over No. 1 Greater Atlanta Christian this week would give No. 3 Lovett its third straight region title. The Lions are already assured of no worse than the No. 2 seed.
Model
The Blue Devils (7-2, 3-2) can clinch 7-AA's No. 3 seed with a win over Gordon Lee (2-6, 1-3). A loss and things could get messy, with four teams vying for the region's final two playoff spots. Model's only two losses came against region frontrunnners Coosa and Darlington. No Blue Devils team has won eight games in a season since 1980.
