Here’s a quick look at what happened Friday night and a peek at a couple of key games next week.
Down year for Dooly
Sometimes, even the best programs have an off year. That appears to be the case this season with Dooly County. The Bobcats are 1-2 and made dubious history Friday night by giving up 50 points in consecutive games, after falling to top-ranked Marion County 50-12 Friday night. Last week, Dooly was blown out by Turner County, 50-6.
ELCA bounces back
After getting drilled by Class AA Greater Atlanta Christian 33-3 last week, Eagle’s Landing Christian dominated Mt. Pisgah Christian 56-6. Running backs Trevor Gear and Josh Mays, and quarterback DJ Hammond each scored two touchdowns in the first half of the contest.
Commerce falls
The Tigers (2-1), ranked No. 10, could not overcome four turnovers in a 34-10 loss to Class AAA No. 3 Jefferson, 34-10.
Watch out for Prince Avenue and Turner County
Both PAC and Turner County moved to 3-0 with blowout wins Friday. PAC rolled over George Walton 45-6, while Turner County blasted Randolph-Clayton 31-6. PAC is accustomed to fast starts, having gone 43-9 the past four seasons. However, this much success is new to Turner County, which has a record of 17-25 over the same four –year stretch.
Next week …
Marion County (2-0) at Class AAAAA Columbus (3-0). The defending Class A public school champions will step way up in class to take on a Blue Jacket team that is having an historic season thus far. Columbus, a team that has not won more than five games since going 6-4 in 2005, is 3-0 for the first time since 1974. Marion won the first ever meeting between the two schools last season, 34-31. The Eagles are coming off a 50-12 win over Dooly County on Friday, while Columbus downed Manchester 20-13 on Thursday night.
Irwin County (1-1-1) vs. Clinch County (2-0). Irwin County, last year’s public school runner up, has the exact same record as it did last season at this time. However, things have improved for their opponent next week. At this stage last season, Clinch was 1-2, after falling to Berrian 13-12. But this year the Panthers are 3-0 after throttling Berrian 55-12 on Friday. They are also hoping to change the outcome against Irwin County, which won last year’s meeting 47-7.
