Rome's 7-6 victory over Stephenson was the biggest upset of the first round, based on the rankings. Stephenson was No. 2 in Class AAAAA. Rome became the 10th team since 1996, when the playoffs expanded to 32 teams, to defeat a team ranked No. 2 or higher in the opening round. Of the previous nine, five lost in the next round, three in the quarterfinals, and one (Whitewater in 2010) made the semifinals.
