Defending Class AAAAAA champion Colquitt County has rolled through its first six opponents, winning each game by more than 20 points. Most recently, the No. 1-ranked Packers beat a pretty good Lowndes team 42-20 on Friday.
This week, Colquitt travels eighth-ranked Lee County (6-0), which was impressive in its 42-14 victory over previously unbeaten Tift County last week.
Lee County will be Colquitt's first Georgia-ranked opponent. Quarterback Garet Morrell is committed to Marshall, and guard Chris Barnes to Georgia. Aubrey Solomon, a junior, is rated the consensus No. 8 defensive tackle nationally in the class of 2017.
Two more pretty good games …
Lowndes (4-2) at Camden County (6-0): These two South Georgia powers won six state titles between them in the previous decade. Then a strange thing happened in 2014. Both missed the state playoffs, each going 0-3 down the stretch in tough Region 1. Don’t count on that again. Camden is ranked No. 9, and Lowndes has lost only to No. 1 Colquitt and No. 3 Roswell.
North Cobb (3-3) at McEachern (4-1): Neither has lost a Region 4 game, so this ultimately could be for the title. North Cobb’s losses are by a combined seven points, one to No. 1 Northside-Warner Robins (AAAAA), another to No. 1 Cartersville (AAAA). McEachern is ranked No. 7.
More games of note …
Tift County (5-1, 0-1) travels to Valdosta (4-2, 0-1) in a Region 1 game. …
Region 3 – which appears headed toward a East Coweta-Newnan shootout in the final week – will be pretty clear after this week. East Coweta (5-0, 2-0) plays at home against Hughes (2-3, 2-0), and Newnan (4-1, 2-0) goes to Westlake (3-2, 1-1). Those are the four likely playoff teams.
There is an odd situation going on in Region 7. Mill Creek, Norcross, Peachtree Ridge and Collins Hill each are 3-0 in region play. Each plays an 0-3 team Friday. If the 3-0 teams win, then all will clinch state-playoff berths on Oct. 9. Wonder when that’s ever happened. The games are Mill Creek at Mountain View, Norcross at Meadowcreek, Collins Hill at Duluth and (probably the most competitive) Peachtree Ridge at North Gwinnett.
