Colquitt County’s three-headed offensive attack was too much for Mill Creek, as the Packers prevailed 31-14 in a battle between two Class AAAAAA powers at the Corky Kell Classic.
The No. 2-ranked Packers (1-0) were led by running back Sihiem King, quarterback Chase Parrish and wide receiver Kiel Pollard, who helped Colquitt amass 454 total yards.
King rushed 26 times for 152 yards and one touchdown. Parrish completed 20 of 29 passes for 256 yards and one touchdown. Pollard had 10 receptions for 144 yards and one touchdown.
No. 6 Mill Creek was paced by quarterback Daniel David, who completed 14 of 24 for 193 yards and two touchdowns, and carried 12 times for 41 yards. Johnathan Hawkins rushed 15 times for 48 yards and Brian Efianayi carried nine times for 43 yards.
Colquitt scored on its first possession. The Packers drove 80 yards in nine plays, with Qwazavia Lee scoring on a 4-yard run with 4:48 left. Lee had put Colquitt in scoring possession by pulling in a 36-yard reception from Parrish.
The Packers picked up their second scored midway in the second period. King’s 29-yard run put Colquitt in the red zone and led ty a 25-yard field goal from Luis Martinez with 6:43 left in the half.
Mill Creek got on the board with 3:17 left in the half. David rolled left off play action and threw to Micah Pulley for a 13-yard touchdown. David had a key fourth-down 15-yard pass to Miles Riley to keep the drive alive.
The Hawks took the lead with 1:40 left in the half thanks to some trickery. David got the ball back after a double-reverse and threw to David Curry for a 52-yard touchdown.
Colquitt drove to the 3 before the end of the half but failed to score. The Packers missed on a pair of passes before settling for a 20-yard field goal attempt that Martinez missed at the horn.
Lee returned the second-half kickoff 55 yards to set up Colquitt’s go-ahead score. Parrish threw a 12-yard pass to Pollard at the 9:56 mark to give the Packers a 17-14 lead.
Colquitt took a 24-14 lead thanks to an 88-yard drive. It was the second straight possession that the Packers began deep in their own territory. The touchdown came on a 36-yard run by King with 11:00 remaining.
Mill Creek had a chance to cut the lead but failed to pick up a fourth-and-7 late in the quarter. Colquitt took over on downs and scored an insurance touchdown when Rafael Merritt picked up King’s fumble and ran it 37 yards for a score.
