Guard John Ogwuche’s free throw with 3.8 seconds left gave Greenforest the winning margin.
With the game tied at 56-56, Greenforest called timeout and decided to play for one shot. Ogwuche dribbled out the clock and powered into the lane, drawing a foul. He missed the first free throw, but made the second.
A last-second 3-pointer by Athens Christian’s Turtle Thomas bounced off the glass.
No. 2-ranked Greenforest (27-1) got 18 points from Justin Ravenel and 14 points from Justin Forrest. Ogwuche scored seven.
No. 3-ranked Athens Christian (29-1) got 19 points from Randy Brownlee, 15 from Turtle Jackson and 14 from Dementrius McWhorter.
Athens Christian bolted to a 21-10 lead after one quarter and maintained the advantage until the end of the third quarter, when Greenforest’s John Ogwuche hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to give his team a 42-40 lead.
The teams exchanged the lead three times until Greenforest went ahead 45-44 on a pair of free throws by Baybe Iyiola. Greenforest went up by four points when Justin Forrest converted a three-point play to make it 48-44.
Athens Academy rallied to tie the game on a basket by McWhorter and a pair of free throws by Jackson with 54.3 seconds to play.
