Cartersville coach Joey King doesn’t think his 2-0 team should be ranked No. 1 in Class AAAA. Too bad, because that’s just where the Purple Hurricanes sit in the latest AJC poll, heading into Friday’s game against North Paulding.
Cartersville took over the No. 1 spot this week, after Buford had its 42-game winning streak snapped by McEachern. Buford had been ranked No. 1 for 32 ranking weeks, a streak dating back to 2012.
But now the Purple Hurricanes and sophomore blue-chip QB Trevor Lawrence own that honor.
“People have talked about it. Some people have sent messages or tweets to let us know,” King said. “I told our guys it really, truly doesn’t mean anything. All it means is we have a target on our backs. In my personal opinion, I think Buford still should be No. 1 until someone in AAAA beats them.”
If Cartersville and Buford win their respective regions, the two teams could not meet until the state semifinal. But that’s further down the road than King is looking right now.
