The Callaway football team has been one of the most consistently good groups in the state for many years under coach Pete Wiggins. Now the Cavaliers are starting to get some statewide attention – even though they don’t have a high-profile recruit like receiver Terry Godwin or defensive end KeShun Freeman.

The Cavs (4-1) broke into the top 10 for the first time earlier this week. They have won four in a row since losing the season opener to LaGrange. Callaway will be favored in their next four games before closing the season against No. 7 Central Carroll, who won the Region 5-AAA title a year ago.

Callaway has done it primarily on the strength of its offense. The Cavs have not scored fewer than 30 points in any of their four victories. On the other side, they have not allowed fewer than two touchdowns in any game.

The centerpiece of the offense is running back Cedric Maynard, a 5-foot-8, 176-pound senior who has already rushed for 1,100 yards and averages 12 yards per carry. He is a threat to go the distance any time he touches the ball.

The quarterback is Braylon Sanders, who took the job midway through the season a year ago after moving over from wide receiver.

The defense is led by linebacker Dre Martin, who helped solidify the defense after being move moved over from safety. Linebacker Javoski Leverette, who is back after missing last season with a broken leg, has posted double-digit tackles in each game.
