Blessed Trinity 24, Westminster 10
No. 2 Blessed Trinity improved to 7-0 with a 24-10 win over Westminster in Region 4-AAA Division B play Friday night.
Milton Shelton’s 85-yard touchdown run with 4:50 to play dashed any hopes of a Wildcats senior night upset at Henderson Stadium. The senior, who averaged 120 rushing yards per game, had not run for more than 13 yards before the fourth-quarter sprint. The long run gave him 173 yards rushing on the night, on 22 carries.
The teams entered the fourth quarter tied at 10, and Garrett Dupuis hit freshman tight end J.D. Bertrand for a 13-yard halfback pass to put the Titans ahead with 7:35 to play.
“I was real proud of our run game and their willingness to not give up,” Blessed Trinity head coach Tim McFarlin said. “We just kept pounding, and Milton did what he’s been doing for four years.”
Blessed Trinity opened the game with a 14-play drive that ended with a 20-yard field goal from Brooks Hosea. The Titans moved the ball inside the Westminster 5 behind quarterback Conor Davis, who completed his first five passes for 44 yards.
Zay Malcome intercepted Davis and returned the ball 23 yards for a touchdown to put Westminster ahead 7-3 with 7:59 to play in the second quarter. Malcome jumped in front of Ryan Davis and raced up the left sideline.
Blessed Trinity responded with an 80-yard drive to go ahead 10-7, capped by a 24-yard pass from Conor Davis to Ryan Davis. The drive was aided by a targeting penalty called on Malcome after a third-down reception by Ryan Davis (six receptions, 85 yards). The Titans scored on the next play.
Conor Davis finished the night 10-of-13 passing for 124 yards and one interception.
Westminster tied the game at 10 just before halftime with a 36-yard field goal from Blake Gillikin. The Wildcats moved the ball to the Blessed Trinity 15 and converted the kick with nine seconds to play.
“I thought we were wearing them down a bit because they’ve blown everyone out,” Westminster head coach Gerry Romberg said. “We were in it going into the fourth quarter and that’s all we can ask against such a good team.”
Westminster (3-4, 1-2 in Region 4-AAA) got 55 yards rushing on nine carries from Malcome, and 91 yards passing from quarterback Rankin Woley.
