In January 2015, shortly after Georgia Tech’s Orange Bowl championship season wrapped up, defensive coordinator Ted Roof met with LSU coach Les Miles about the opening on his staff for the same position.

The meeting was reported late last week by the Advocate of Baton Rouge, La. Roof's name was on a list of 25 candidates that LSU had compiled for the search. The document was part of a filing by the university as part of a legal skirmish between the school and former LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis. The school contends that Chavis owes a $400,000 buyout for breaking his contract early. Chavis contends instead that LSU owes him $445,000.

According to the report in the Advocate, Miles and football operations director Dean Dingman met with Roof in Lawrenceville Jan. 7. Other coordinators whom Miles met with were Wisconsin’s Dave Arranda, Penn State’s Bob Shoop and Oklahoma’s Mike Stoops. LSU also met with, and ultimately hired, Kevin Steele, then Alabama’s linebackers coach.

Steele received a two-year contract worth $1 million annually. Roof was in the process of receiving a contract extension worth $750,000 per year for the next three seasons.
