A few observations on offense: Charles Perkins moved up to the top of the A-back competition. He wasn’t even in the top five on the pre-camp two-deep, but is now a starter. Synjyn Days dropped down from the starting spot. … Brandon Oliver, a walk-on, is an interesting No. 2 at wide receiver, ahead of multiple scholarship players. Corey Dennis had been on the depth chart going into camp and receivers coach Buzz Preston spoke well of him Monday. … Wide receiver Darren Waller and other players suspended for the first two games (A-back Dennis Andrews and cornerback Lynn Griffin are others) are not on the depth chart. … Chris Griffin and Bryan Chamberlain have flopped tackle spots, as Griffin has been more comfortable and effective on the right side. True freshman Trey Klock is backing up Griffin, and walk-on Kyle Stallard has been making an impression in camp.
Defense: The alignment on the chart is a 4-3 as opposed to a 4-2-5. Tech concentrated on the 4-2-5 in the spring and made it its base defense, but used a 4-3 in the scrimmage Saturday, although coaches and players did not ascribe much meaning to it. Not sure what this means going forward. Depth charts aren’t necessarily a true reflection of alignment and order, but it’s interesting to note, at the very least. The chart released by the school does note that the defense is multiple. … True freshman Tyler Merriweather has moved into the No. 2 spot at strongside defensive end. KeShun Freeman and Roderick Rook-Chungong were listed as co-No. 1’s going into camp, but Freeman has claimed the top spot. … Walk-on Chase Alford is backing up Quayshawn Nealy at inside linebacker. … Griffin is the likely starter at cornerback, but Chris Milton has taken his place, at least for the time being. … Twins Lawrence and Lance Austin are the backup corners, though Step Durham had worked with the second string in the scrimmage. ... There are four true freshmen in the defensive top 23.
