On two separate occasions this season, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson made public his frustration with his team's standing in the ACC in regards to resources. He said in August that Tech was " way behind " in the conference for facilities and staff.
In October, he said that " commitment has to meet expectations ," meaning that Tech shouldn't be expected to beat teams that have a greater commitment from their schools than the Yellow Jackets.
USA Today's database of assistant coach salaries, published this week, would offer support to his contentions.
Among the eight ACC schools that were required to comply with open-records laws, Tech was eighth in assistant coach salary pool for this season at $2,534,515. Clemson was first (and second overall in FBS) at $5,390,417. That’s a pool 113 percent deeper than Tech’s.
Tech was also 47th among all FBS teams. Only four power-conference teams (Texas Tech, Purdue, Rutgers and Iowa State) were behind the Jackets.
Boston College, Duke, Miami, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Wake Forest did not have to provide salary information, as five of the six are private institutions and the state of Pennsylvania’s open-records laws are such that Pittsburgh does not have to release its coaches’ salaries.
