Former Georgia Tech defensive backs D.J. White and Jamal Golden will be performing for dozens of NFL talent evaluators this week at practices leading up to the East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Fla. The shrine game is probably the second most prestigious pre-draft showcase game following the Senior Bowl, which takes place next week in Mobile, Ala.
More than 90 participants from last year’s shrine game made an NFL training camp, 40 of whom were drafted. That number includes former Tech wide receiver Darren Waller, who was drafted by Baltimore in the sixth round partly on the strength of a strong showing at the shrine game. Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. of ESPN projects both White and Golden as "Day 3 guys," meaning in rounds 4-7.
The game will be played Saturday at 4 p.m. and will be televised by the NFL Network.
The East team’s head coach is former Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis. The East team coach for the secondary is former Miami Dolphins cornerback Sam Madison. The team’s defensive coordinator is James Harrell, the father of former Tech linebacker Anthony Harrell, who transferred to Florida last summer. The younger Harrell is also on the East team. James Harrell played several NFL seasons and had a successful run as a high school coach in the Tampa, Fla., area.
Former Tech B-back Patrick Skov is also performing before scouts at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in the Los Angeles area. That game will be played Saturday at 6 p.m. on ESPN2. Practices will be aired live Wednesday and Thursday on ESPNU.
