FLOWERY BRANCH -- The struggling San Francisco 49ers have elected to bench quarterback Colin Kaepernick in favor of Blaine Gabbert, according to several reports.

Three years after leading the 49ers to a 28-24 victory over the Falcons in the NFC championship game and earning a trip to the Super Bowl, Kaepernick is being benched likely for his erratic play an inability to read defenses.

Gabbert, a former first-round pick by Jacksonville, has a 5-22 record as an NFL starter.

The Falcons (6-2) play the 49ers (2-6) at 4 p.m. Sunday at Levi Stadium  in Santa Clara, Calif.

The 49ers have informed Kaepernick of the move, NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reports, via a source informed of the situation.

Kyle McLorg of Bay Area Sports Guy first reported Kaepernick's benching.
