Delta Air Lines has diverted about 40 flights due to thunderstorms in Atlanta that affected flights due to arrive at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Atlanta-based Delta said it "expects the convective weather to taper off by midmorning."
The Federal Aviation Administration put in place a ground stop earlier Wednesday morning, and replaced it with a ground delay program later in the morning. Flights arriving in Atlanta were being delayed an average of 21 minutes at around 11:30 a.m., according to the FAA.
Other flights around the country are being affected by weather in other regions. Delta said freezing rain in the Northeast is affecting its flights there, and the airline canceled about 120 Delta Connection regional flights in anticipation of that storm and said more flight disruptions are possible.
Delta is allowing passengers with flights booked to, from or through New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, Cincinnati, Baltimore and other affected cities to make a change to their travel plans without paying certain change fees.
A snowstorm in Paris is also affecting flights there, and Delta is also waiving certain change fees for passengers booked to travel to, from or through Paris on Wednesday.
