Tuesday will be a day of change for North Georgia as showers return to the forecast this afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Scattered rain is expected for the evening drive, and showers are only going to get heavier and more widespread overnight, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said. More rain and a chance of severe weather is in Wednesday’s forecast.
“Enjoy the start of the day, because during the morning hours we are not going to need the umbrella,” Deon said. “But you do want to have it with you, because we are going to see those showers moving in, especially overnight and into Wednesday.”
Tuesday is starting out dry and mild with temperatures in the upper 40s in Atlanta. Deon said the city will make it to 64 degrees as the clouds build in ahead of the evening rain.
She expects the dry conditions to hold through the early part of the evening drive before showers begin firing up. Overnight, rain will really fill in, she said, and it could be heavy at times on Wednesday morning.
“Think about that and plan accordingly, because with the heavy rainfall during the morning drive, that’s going to make for a slow and messy go,” Deon said.
North Georgia will get a break from the rain Wednesday afternoon before another round of showers that evening, according to the latest forecast. Deon said there is also a possibility for a strong storm Wednesday, but any severe weather will mostly be confined to the south.
“It’s a low-end threat, a Level 1 of five,” she said. “We’re watching out for some strong, damaging wind gusts and mainly hail as the main threats.”
By Wednesday night, some parts of North Georgia could record 1 to 2 inches of rainfall. With another round of rain Friday, rainfall totals could top 3 inches by the end of the week, according to Channel 2.
“Wednesday will be really one of our wetter days of the week, but then we are dry in time for St. Patrick’s Day,” Deon said. “Any St. Paddy’s Day celebrations you might have outdoors, we are going to be in good shape.”

It may be dry Tuesday morning, but conditions are rough on a major Gwinnett County road, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
A crash in the westbound lanes of Ga. 316 near Sugarloaf Parkway is contributing to growing delays out of Lawrenceville, the Traffic Center reported. The crash is on the right shoulder but is also blocking part of a left lane.
“I want you to go ahead and avoid this,” traffic reporter Mike Shields said. “Use Ga. 120 or U.S. 29 out of Lawrenceville to get to I-85.”
