Changes are headed for metro Atlanta that likely will bring some much-needed rain and cooler weather by this weekend.
Tuesday will be the “day of transition” as the region readies to leave behind a weekslong dry streak and welcome a cold front, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. There won’t be any major changes to the weather Tuesday, with a chilly start giving way to another warm afternoon.
“We are going to notice a few more clouds around, but no worries just yet,” Deon said. “Umbrellas are not required for today. We will need to put those umbrellas to use at times for our Wednesday.”
The front moving in Wednesday will mean a 60% chance of scattered rain throughout the day, she said. Some downpours will be heavy at times, but Deon is not expecting a washout.
“We’re getting that moisture coming in from both directions, coming in off the Atlantic and from the Gulf of Mexico, so as a front arrives on Wednesday, that’s going to really help to up our rain chances,” she said.
On Tuesday, Atlanta is starting out a little warmer than the day before with temperatures in the mid-50s. It’s still jacket weather, Deon said, but no jackets are needed this afternoon with a projected high of 76 degrees in the forecast.
The weather will be ideal at Truist Park for Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies. Traffic around the stadium is expected to pick up well ahead of first pitch, according to WSB traffic reporter Mike Shields.
“Late morning volume is really going to increase,” he said. “Parking lots at the stadium open at 9 a.m., gates to the stadium open at 11 a.m., and of course first pitch against the Phillies at 1:07 p.m.,” he said.
Add to that backups caused by ongoing construction and reduced lanes at the I-285 and Ga. 400 interchange, and the top end of the Perimeter could get pretty full toward the end of the Tuesday morning commute.
The changes went into effect over the weekend, but Tuesday should be the first real test of the reduced lanes on metro Atlanta traffic with schools back in session after the Columbus Day holiday.
Wednesday will be a warmer day, despite the chance of rain. Deon expects rain to hang on early Thursday before metro Atlanta dries out and cools down for the end of the week. By Friday morning, lows in the 40s return to the forecast.
