A tractor-trailer overturned on I-285 on Monday morning and shut down all westbound lanes in Sandy Springs, adding delays to an already messy commute.

The crash at the Roswell Road exit brought traffic to a standstill from about 6:15 a.m. until about 9:30 a.m., when all lanes reopened, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The tractor-trailer was on its side in a busy construction area, where an ongoing GDOT project has reduced lanes in both directions. Steel pipes spilled onto the interstate, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

At the height of the shutdown, traffic was backed up on Ga. 400, and the outer loop was “a parking lot” stretching back into Doraville, traffic reporter Mark McKay said. A crane was brought in to upright the big rig shortly after 8 a.m.

It was not clear what caused the crash. No injuries were reported.
