SunTrust Banks named Allison Dukes chairman and CEO of its banking operations in the Atlanta market, the first woman to get the job.

Allison Dukes was named the new head of SunTrust Banks’ Atlanta operations, the first woman to hold that job at the Atlanta-based company.

SunTrust said Thursday that Dukes is succeeding longtime Atlanta Division CEO Jenner Wood, who was named a corporate executive vice president in SunTrust’s Wholesale Banking unit.

Wood, who has been at SunTrust since 1975, also was recently named incoming chairman of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, starting Dec. 1.

Dukes, who began her career at SunTrust in 1997, was most recently president of SunTrust’s Atlanta Division. SunTrust’s Atlanta unit is the largest bank in metro Atlanta by deposits, with a 27 percent market share.

Dukes, who rose up mainly through the company’s wealth management and investment banking operations at SunTrust Robinson Humphrey, said she plans to draw on that background to help Atlanta businesses raise capital and grow.

“We’re looking to partner with companies fairly early on and grow with them,” she said. “We see many opportunities.”
