Atlanta missed 70 degrees Wednesday by the smallest of margins, peaking at 69, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Meanwhile, traffic is starting to clear up as the evening commute comes to an end after a rough day on the roads.

Ga. 400 was among the hardest hit by congestion, with both northbound and southbound lanes being blocked at some point Wednesday due to issues.

All southbound lanes were shut down by Alpharetta officers to conduct a police operation in the morning, and all northbound lanes were blocked at the beginning of the evening commute by a crash involving a motorcycle.

Likewise, Spaghetti Junction traffic was a mess after this morning's pedestrian crash investigation.

A gas leak also blocked Providence Road between Cowart and Bethany roads for about two hours, according to the City of Milton. The road reopened just after 5:15 p.m.

Despite some cloud cover, Wednesday was a nice and warm day in North Georgia. It’s 66 degrees in Atlanta, as of 6:30 p.m.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said rain chances are low.

“You can’t rule out that little light sprinkle here and there, or a little mizzle off and on,” Minton said. (Mizzle is Minton’s term for mist and drizzle and one of the things North Georgia will miss hearing in the forecast when she begins her retirement Thursday.)

The rain chance increases to 80 percent for Thursday, Monahan said.

“Tomorrow morning’s commute, it’s going to be a little wetter across North Georgia,” he said. “Could pick up a half-inch of rain or more through the day on Thursday. Friday, some showers, and then even more rain coming in for the weekend, especially on Sunday.”

Sunday will be the wettest weekend day, he said, and temperatures will drop on the other side of a cold front. By the end of the weekend, North Georgia could get another 1 to 2 inches of rain, with higher amounts possible toward Athens.

“Some spots could see another 2 or more inches of rain on top of all the rain that we saw last week,” Monahan said.

Early next week, North Georgia should return to freezing temperatures, he said.
