A cold front stalled across the North Georgia mountains will provide the fuel for scattered showers and storms Wednesday, according to Channel 2 Action News.
The forecast calls for a 70% chance of rain this afternoon. Like Tuesday, there should be periods of sunshine in between the downpours, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
A few of the storms could be strong.
“Heavy rain and frequent lightning will be our impact for these storms,” he said.
There are already a few showers falling Wednesday morning on the Southside. Monahan said an area of heavier rain on the radar should stay well south of I-20 and slide down into Middle and South Georgia.
Showers should remain isolated through the morning before picking up in frequency around lunchtime, he said.
“The rain chance is coming up at noon,” he said. “Just like yesterday, I expect an active radar at lunchtime with scattered showers and storms. We'll be in the low 80s.”
Wednesday’s projected high is 82 degrees.
North Georgia is not expected to warm up or dry out until the weekend, and even then there is a chance of isolated showers and storms. The weekend could bring additional problems for those with asthma or allergies.
A massive plume of dust from the Sahara Desert is headed for the Southeast by the end of the week, according to Channel 2. The dust is expected to concentrate in the early and evening hours of the day, causing air quality issues.
“One good effect it’s going to have: We're going to have amazing sunrises and sunsets,” Monahan said. “When the sun is low on the horizon, the light passes through that dust and it gives you really deep red and orange colors.”
He said to expect to see the dust plume Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
There is no dust and very little rain to worry about Wednesday morning. It looks like metro Atlanta will not have to worry about heavy traffic, either.
Conditions remain lighter than normal early Wednesday, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center. There are no major delays on metro Atlanta interstates, the Traffic Center reported at 6 a.m.
