WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Wrecks blemish hottest October day on record in Atlanta

Atlanta broke the all-time high for the month of October on Wednesday.

Today is a historic day.

Atlanta peaked at 96 degrees, decimating the previous record high for Oct. 2 of 89 degrees while becoming the hottest October day ever recorded in the city, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The previous record of 95 degrees was set on Oct. 5 and Oct. 6 in 1954, Channel 2 reported.

Unfortunately, Wednesday was also a rough day on the roads, with some problems still affecting drivers.

Atlanta’s morning commute was heavily affected by a deadly pedestrian crash on I-20 that ended up involving several cars, blocking the interstate in both directions for two to three hours.

South Fulton County traffic is being affected by another deadly crash during the evening commute. All northbound travel on Camp Creek Parkway past Campbellton Road is blocked after the wreck, which involved a tractor-trailer and a sedan.

The average high temperature for this time of year is 77 degrees. Atlanta met that mark before sunrise, the news station reported.

Atlanta typically reaches the 90-degree mark 37 days a year, but Wednesday is the 89th day this year of temperatures in the 90s, according to Channel 2.

If the forecast holds true, Atlanta will break the record of 90 days in the 90s on Friday, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said. That mark was set in 2011.

“It’s like a game of ‘Can you top this?’” Monahan said.

Don’t count on rain to bring relief, as there is no chance of precipitation in the forecast.

Those headed to the Braves’ first playoff game Thursday could see a record high of 98 degrees by 4 p.m. First pitch against the St. Louis Cardinals is an hour later.

By 8 p.m., temperatures could still be in the 90s, according to Channel 2.

Don’t worry, Monahan said. You’ll be able to unpack your fall wardrobe soon.

“We have just a couple of more days to sweat through,” he said.

High temperatures are expected to dip into the low 80s by the weekend, Monahan said.
