North Georgia is in for another day of scattered storms, but the risk of widespread severe weather is lower Tuesday, according to Channel 2 Action News.
Thousands in North Georgia were left without power Monday afternoon when strong storms rolled through, toppling trees and power lines. Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said while everyone could see heavy rain and lightning Tuesday, only those south of Atlanta are at risk of damaging wind gusts.
“Those storms will move through in waves,” he said. “It’s going to be one of those days — a lot like like yesterday — you get hit with one round of storms, it might get sunny for a little while, and then another round is going to come in.”
Metro Atlanta is dry to start the day, but the rain chance increases to 40% by 10 a.m. and to 60% by noon. Showers and storms will be 70% likely through the afternoon, according to Channel 2.
Monahan said those with plans to exercise outside Tuesday morning might want to head out early.
“It's going to get pretty wet, pretty soggy around here later on today as a cold front approaches North Georgia,” he said.
Only six of the 14 daylight hours Tuesday will be dry, according to Channel 2.
Expect the first waves of storms to fire up around 1 p.m., Monahan said. Overnight, he said things will quiet down before another round of storms Wednesday.
The cold front moving in Tuesday is expected to settle across North Georgia overnight. The best chance for rain Wednesday will be along that front as temperatures rise in the afternoon, according to Channel 2.
Tuesday’s projected high is 83 degrees, which is five degrees below average for this time of year. Wednesday will be slightly cooler with a projected high of 81, but Monahan said North Georgia will warm back up in time for the weekend.
A chance of rain is in the forecast every day this week.
Weather may be volatile Tuesday, but early morning traffic is pretty tame. There are no major delays on any metro Atlanta interstates at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Volume is expected to build, however. Conditions could deteriorate as roads become wet.
