WEATHER-TRAFFIC UPDATE: Water main break fixed in Roswell; rain enters west Georgia

Severe Weather Team 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns has your Thursday evening weather forecast.

Since Tuesday, a water main has caused headaches for many Roswell drivers — but no longer.

Holcomb Bridge Road has reopened near Alpharetta Highway, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Aside from that bright spot, the roads are still pretty messy Thursday evening.

In Buckhead, a right lane of Ga. 400 South near Lenox Road is blocked because of a crash, causing backups from I-285, the Traffic Center reported.

The Southside has its own problems after a crash on I-75 North blocked two lanes near Forest Parkway, the Traffic Center reported.

One block of West Peachtree Street was also closed again Thursday in Midtown while crews worked to repair a collapsed sewer main. The road is blocked between 3rd and 4th streets.

Authorities have shut down West Peachtree Street near 3rd Street. Traffic has been diverted all week.

At least it isn’t raining — yet. A wave of showers is moving into west Georgia and should reach metro Atlanta later tonight, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“A little bit of storm energy tonight will give us a slight chance for an isolated thunderstorm, but I don’t expect any widespread severe weather or strong thunderstorms,” Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Humidity is up ahead of a system of scattered showers that will make for a wet commute Friday morning. Monahan said a southerly breeze is bringing in more warm, sticky air.

“I can already feel the humidity,” he said. “You will too, and that’s going to lead us into that chance of rain that's coming up into tonight.”

North Georgia started in the 50s and 60s. The cloud cover kept Atlanta from heating up too quickly, and the city hovered around 73 degrees most of the afternoon.

Clouds are thickening up Thursday above Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport's South terminal ahead of a weather-making cold front.

Despite the dry, warm weather, pollen levels are on the decline. At 75 particles per cubic meter of air, tree pollen levels are in the moderate range.

That dry weather pattern is changing for longer than just Thursday night. Rain chances increase Friday.

“As a cold front comes through, we have scattered showers (Friday),” Monahan said. “It’s not a complete covering of rain across North Georgia, so not everybody is going to see rain tomorrow, but we'll all have that opportunity.”

A 70 percent chance of rain Friday morning diminishes through the afternoon as the cold front moves by, he said. Rain likely won’t be very heavy, with less than a half-inch of accumulation expected, according to Channel 2.

“And then, by late in the day, drier air comes in,” Monahan said. “That is a great sign for your weekend. It is going to be really nice around here on Saturday and on Sunday.”

Afternoon highs are forecast in the low 70s with showers around Friday, but temps rebound to near 80 degrees for the weekend, according to Channel 2. There is a low 20 percent chance of rain Sunday.
