The rain that swamped the region over the weekend is moving out just in time to make for a sunny Christmas.
It’s going to be cold, though, including temperatures in the middle 20s Christmas morning. But you won’t need the umbrella.
“We may be done with rain for the year,” said meteorologist Brad Nitz with Channel 2 Action News.
The forecast for both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day includes sunshine and wind gusts up to 25 mph, Nitz said. High temperatures both days will reach the middle to upper 40s.
Drier weather should make for safer travel on state roads, but officers will be out in force for the holiday period, the Georgia Department of Public Safety said. In 2012, state law enforcement officers investigated a total 4,407 crashes that resulted in 1,476 injuries and 26 fatalities from 6 p.m. Christmas Eve until midnight Christmas Day.
State troopers will specifically be on the lookout for impaired drivers and those not wearing seat belts, said Col. Mark W. McDonough, the state’s DPS commissioner.
“Plan your trips carefully and allow plenty of time to reach your destinations,” McDonough said. “Make sure everyone is buckled up and that children are properly restrained. Don’t text and drive, and obey the posted speed limit.”
The state DOT has postponed construction projects during the holidays, but travelers are advised to check conditions before heading out to visit family and friends. Motorists statewide can check traffic maps at www.511ga.org or call 511 from any phone for free, real-time traffic information, the DOT said.
Temperatures should warm slightly through the week, and by the weekend, highs will reach the 50s, with lows in the 30s, Nitz said.
