WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Rain should continue; severe thunderstorms shouldn’t

People can look for less destructive weather Sunday in metro Atlanta, though rain should still be in the mix.

“Things are going to be a little quieter for us today,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said Sunday morning.

Thunderstorms Saturday blew down trees, power lines, flooded I-75 and started everyone’s morning off really soggy.

There will be some showers, according to Monahan, but in areas such as Hall, Cherokee and Forsyth counties and points north.

“Rain chance is highest in the mountains,” Monahan said.

Severe weather is not expected.

The 30 percent chance of rain won’t really come to fruition until midafternoon, Monahan said.

There’s a catch though — Sunday will be our driest day for awhile.

An upper area of low pressure is expected to move into Georgia by Monday, which will bring rain and storms with it, Monahan said.

“Just because (the area of low pressure) is going to be over us, that doesn’t mean we’re talking severe weather,” Monahan said. “In fact, I think the severe weather risk overall this week will be low, but the rain risk isn’t.”

Widespread showers are likely for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and probably Thursday, too, Monahan said. The chance of rain should be around 60 to 70 percent each of those days.

The rain will cool Georgia down significantly next week, providing some well below average temperatures for July. The high should hover around 84 degrees.

The Georgia Department of Transportation will try to take advantage of Sunday’s lower rain chances by squeezing in some road construction projects.

I-85 North near Northcrest Road will be affected by construction starting at 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The number of lanes that will be closed has yet to be determined, according to GDOT.

I-85 North at Clairmont Road will have a right lane closed for construction from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m., GDOT said.
