SUNDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Front to usher in cooler weather, more storms

Here's meteorologist Eboni Deon with a look at your forecast.

Temperatures in the 70s and 80s on Sunday might feel like the start of fall, but North Georgia won’t get the chance to get too comfortable.

Average temperatures are forecast to return by the middle of next week, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Eboni Deon. The dip is thanks to a frontal boundary between warmer and cooler air masses draped over North Georgia.

The front will also fuel more storms Sunday, Deon said.

“That’s going to hang out across our area and also keep that chance for rain and storms in the forecast,” she said.

It is not likely to be a washout, she said.

Atlanta averages about 88 degrees for this time of year. Right now it is 68 degrees in Atlanta and the projected high is 80 degrees.

Some places in North Georgia won’t make it out of the 70s, Deon said.

Out in the tropics, Deon said things are starting to get a little more active heading into peak Atlantic hurricane season. A system over South Florida now has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical storm, especially when it spins back out into the Atlantic. Conditions for development are a little more favorable there, she said.

Another system is also making its way across the ocean.

“We officially have our fourth named storm of the 2019 season: Dorian,” said Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Katie Walls on Saturday evening. “Dorian is forecast to strengthen and could be near hurricane strength when it approaches the Lesser Antilles on Tuesday and near Puerto Rico Thursday”

The rain chance jumps back to 60% Monday and Tuesday and then the heat returns, according to Channel 2.

Another summer weekend of road construction is in the works for metro Atlanta, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.

Lanes will be blocked at the I-285 and Ga. 400 corridor with the expansion project underway. Northside drivers should expect heavy overnight delays on Ga. 400, where work may block ramps onto the interstate at times, the Traffic Center reported.

Additional Ga. 400 work may restrict lanes in Sandy Springs and Roswell between the North Springs MARTA station and Holcomb Bridge Road, according to the Traffic Center.

For one more day, traffic will be impacted on Howell Mill Road in west Midtown while crews dismantle a construction crane. The work has forced a partial closure between 9th Street and 10th Street is scheduled to wrap up Sunday night.

Drivers can also expect delays through East Lake during the daytime hours as the PGA Tour Championship continues Sunday at the East Lake Golf Club. The Traffic Center expects extra congestion along Glenwood Avenue, Memorial Drive and Candler Road.

On the Southside, overnight roadwork will continue in Henry, Spalding and Butts counties on I-75 in both directions between Ga. 155 and Ga. 36.

And in Douglas County, repairs are expected to shut down eastbound lanes on I-20 between Ga. 5 and Thornton Road throughout the weekend.
