ORIGINAL STORY: Heavy rain hit Lawrenceville, Snellville, Lilburn and other parts of metro Atlanta just as a code orange smog alert was issued Tuesday afternoon, according to Channel 2 Action News.

During a code orange smog alert, children, teenagers, elderly adults and people with lung disease or asthma are encouraged to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors.

“Watch for symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath,” according to a post from the Environmental Protection Agency.

More showers are expected later this afternoon, especially in the southern part of metro Atlanta.

Those showers might be accompanied by lightning, heavy downpours and winds up to 40 mph.

“And of course, it’s going to make travel heading home this afternoon difficult,” meteorologist Karen Minton said.

Rain should taper off by 8 p.m.

Temps were 73 degrees in Atlanta, 81 degrees in Blairsville and 76 degrees in Griffin just after 5:32 p.m.

The forecast calls for highs to reach 88 degrees in Atlanta, 80 degrees in Blairsville and 85 degrees in Griffin.
