Despite an increased chance of rain this weekend, Atlanta will continue its hot streak.

Temperatures in the city Saturday morning were seasonally-normal in the low 60s, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said. However, September hasn’t been normal, and neither will today.

Temperatures are expected to quickly shoot up to 92 degrees this afternoon, he said, nearing another September heat record.

“There’s hardly any relief from the heat for the next several days or so,” Burns said.

Saturday should mark the 85th day this year that Atlanta reaches or surpasses 90 degrees, which means the city is nearing its record for the number of days in the 90s. The record is 90 days, which was set in 2011, and Atlanta is expected to tie that on Thursday, Burns said.

For Saturday, the rain chance increases to 40% this afternoon, and there will be plenty of heat in the air to trigger some showers and storms, Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said.

“The heat’s not going anywhere but we are expecting a few more showers to pop up,” she said. “After about 2 or 3 p.m., we’ll have those scattered showers and storms developing. Some heavy downpours are a good bet as those storms start to pick up.”

For college football fans, it’s a relatively quiet weekend in North Georgia. The University of Georgia isn’t playing and Georgia Tech is on the road against Temple. Those planning on going to Philadelphia for the 3:30 game should expect a 20% chance of rain and temperatures in the low 80s around kickoff, according to local weather reports.

Kennesaw State is playing at home, however, and will host Reinhardt University at 6 p.m. Owls fans should probably bring the rain gear just in case, since showers are possible throughout the game.

On Sunday, the Falcons host the Tennessee Titans at 1 p.m. at Mercedes-Benz Stadium so drivers may run into some traffic downtown. Atlanta United is on the road in Canada for their 5 p.m. match against the Montreal Impact.

Temperatures are expected to stay in the 90s through Thursday, meaning next Friday could be the deciding factor in the record for days in the 90s within a year, Channel 2 reported.
