Fog and humidity ruled the early morning air in North Georgia on Saturday, but don’t expect any extreme weather in the afternoon.
“I’m expecting a fairly dry radar throughout the day,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Katie Walls said Saturday morning.
Rain chances are at 20 percent, with Walls expecting isolated “10- to 15-minute downpours” but nothing severe.
All the thick, tropical air prompted Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns to say that metro Atlanta is “covered and smothered in this deep tropical air.”
The humid air is coming all the way from the Pacific Ocean and Hurricane Rosa, Burns said. The air has been following a cold front all the way through northwest Georgia.
“I do expect the cold front to begin drifting to the south overnight, which means a little less in the way of rain (Saturday),” Burns said.
This is great news for college football fans. Saturday is a busy day with the University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and Kennesaw State all hosting games.
Georgia Tech hosts Bowling Green at noon at Bobby Dodd Stadium. Louisiana-Monroe also takes on Georgia State at 2 p.m. at Georgia State Stadium.
Atlanta’s expected high is 85 degrees Saturday, about 7 degrees above the norm. The thick humidity means the heat index will reach the upper 80s.
Tennessee will play UGA at 3:30 p.m., which is around when the heat should peak around 85 degrees in Athens, Burns said.
At 6 p.m., Samford will play Kennesaw State at Fifth Third Bank Stadium, which could increase Cobb County’s traffic.
What will definitely affect Cobb County traffic is construction. The I-75 resurfacing project should continue this weekend, which means 11 miles of the interstate will have three to four lanes blocked in both directions until 5 a.m. Monday, according to the Cobb County Department of Transportation.
An update: Peachtree Road between Narmore Drive and Vermont Road will also have lane closures to fix a street leak Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., according to the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management.
