For the first time in a week, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns predicts morning temperatures will be — pause for dramatic effect — above freezing.

Not only will they be above freezing, but they’ll be a few degrees higher than average, he said. Atlanta shouldn’t dip below 38 degrees, while the average low for this time of year is 35.

“Everybody in the metro will be above freezing,” Burns said. “The mountains — not so much. They’ll be about 32 degrees in Blairsville.”

No matter how cold it is in the morning, Burns said all of North Georgia, including the mountains, should reach at least 60 degrees Saturday afternoon. With no rain in the forecast, it’ll be a perfect day to head downtown for the Super Bowl festivities.

That does mean you’ll have to contend with the litany of road closures ahead of the big game.

Peachtree Street was closed between Ponce de Leon Avenue and Fifth Street to give crews time to ready the Fox Theatre for Saturday night’s NFL Honors program. The road is scheduled to be shut down through 5 p.m. Sunday.

SUPER BOWL TRAFFIC: Big game prep claims major downtown Atlanta street

Martin Luther King Jr. Drive between Northside Drive and Centennial Olympic Park Drive, and Andrew Young International Boulevard between Marietta Street and Centennial Olympic Park Drive are closed until Thursday. Baker Street between Centennial Olympic Park Drive and Luckie Street is closed until Feb. 8.

Mitchell Street between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Elliot Street, and Mangum Street between Markham and Foundry streets will also be closed until Thursday.

One southbound lane of Northside Drive is closed until Saturday while contractors work to build a security fence around Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

MORE: Some road closures already in place, more to come

On Saturday, Northside Drive between Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will be closed. Northside is scheduled to reopen Tuesday.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, Burns has some advice for Mercedes-Benz Stadium: ‘Open the dome! It’s going to be great!”

Sunday has a 20 percent chance of noontime showers, but by game time, Burns said there will only be clouds in the sky. Temperatures should peak at 62 degrees in Atlanta.

That small chance of showers brings on another weather shift for Georgia. Last week's shift was part of a polar vortex, which dropped temperatures through the sub-zero floor across the Midwest. Next week's weather pattern will be the opposite, Burns said.

“We’re going to find warmer temperatures, but we’re also going to find weather disturbances brought along this flow of air (from the Pacific Ocean), meaning there will be a chance of rain every day next week after Sunday,” he said.

Burns said it won’t be a deluge of rain, but there will be wet times to come for North Georgia.
