After storms and tornadoes recently ravaged Georgia, pretty much everyone is hoping for a break this weekend.
Saturday will provide some respite, but Sunday will quickly take that away, according to the latest forecast by Channel 2 Action News.
The good news is that Saturday’s 30% chance of rain is relegated to the early morning hours, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said. A cold front will move through Georgia, bringing some drizzle and light rain with it.
“An isolated shower is possible with that cold front, but it’ll be brief and light,” he said.
Temperatures will be normal for this time of year, with morning lows in the upper 60s and afternoon highs in the low 70s.
However, Sunday’s weather is what people should really care about, Nitz said.
“The focus is really on Sunday ... as a warm front lifts to the north, the severe weather risk goes up,” he said.
By 6 p.m., a wave of severe weather is expected to be moving through the metro Atlanta area, Nitz said.
Middle and South Georgia are at a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe weather, which means tornadoes are possible in addition to heavy rain and strong winds. A portion of Georgia between Griffin and Atlanta is at a Level 2 risk, which means spin-up tornadoes are still a possibility. Areas north of that are at a Level 1 risk.
A second wave of potentially severe storms is expected overnight Sunday, so Nitz asked Georgians to continue to pay attention to weather forecasts through the weekend as the storm system’s path becomes more clear.
The storms will produce a lot of rain, which means most of metro Atlanta can expect and inch or two of rain by Monday morning, according to Channel 2. A few spots in west Georgia and the North Georgia mountain could see up to 4 inches of rain.

With the statewide shelter in place policy still active, traffic on metro Atlanta’s roads and interstates will be light this weekend. However, a few ongoing construction projects will create a few slow spots that drivers will want to avoid.
A right eastbound lane of I-20 will be blocked near Glenwood Avenue from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation. The I-20 ramp to I-285 North will also be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
Once the last of the storms dissipate Monday morning, the sun will come out again for the new work week, allowing temperatures to return to the mid-70s by the middle of the week.
