Saturday morning got off to a chilly start, but Atlanta will have a great weekend to unwind after a rainy, snowy and freezing week for North Georgia.
Temperatures dropped below freezing overnight, but any remaining icy patches are expected to melt as it warms to the mid-50s this afternoon.
“Temperatures will begin to moderate (this weekend) but not before a very chilly start across most of northern Georgia,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Glenn Burns said.
An approaching area of high pressure will bring warmer air to the Southeast, quickly raising temperatures.
“As the wind begins to change from the north to a more southwesterly direction, temperatures will moderate quite a bit,” he said.
Atlanta is expected to peak at about 56 degrees, but a lack of rain and plenty of sunshine should make it a good winter day to be outdoors. No rain is predicted for Sunday either, rewarding Georgia after a week of fluctuating weather.
“A completely dry weekend? That’s something we haven’t had around in quite some time,” Channel 2 meteorologist Eboni Deon said. “You definitely want to get out there and enjoy it.”
The Atlanta Beltline will undoubtedly be crowded during the weekend, but emergency repairs will keep one section blocked off, according to the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management. A sinkhole near the Ladybird Grove & Mess Hall restaurant prompted crews to close the walking trail between Irwin Street and Montag Circle.
Officials with the Beltline do not know how long the closure will last.

Metro Atlanta’s dry spell won’t last for long, with rain returning for most of Monday.
How much rain? Atlanta has a 100% chance of precipitation, and that rain is expected to linger due to an oncoming front, Burns said.
“Unfortunately this front is likely to stall, so we’ll probably see rain into Wednesday,” he said.
As a result, most of metro Atlanta and Middle Georgia could see an inch or 2 of rain by Tuesday night.
