Showers that dumped more than an inch of rain across much of metro Atlanta overnight continued into the Thursday morning commute, but forecasters are promising drier conditions by the afternoon drive home as a cold front works its way through the area.

Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the rain should taper off by late Thursday morning, with skies beginning to clear by about 3 or 4 p.m.

While most of metro Atlanta remained under a flood watch through 6 p.m. Thursday, no flooding issues had been reported by daybreak.

Rainfall totals through 6 a.m. included 1.27 inches in Marietta, 1.28 inches in Jonesboro and 1.35 inches in Dunwoody and at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.

Minton said temperatures will be much cooler behind the cold front, dipping into the 30s by early Friday, with the “really cold air getting in here by Saturday morning.”

Minton said skies will be sunny Friday through Sunday, with highs Friday only reaching 49 degrees after a morning low around 48.

Saturday’s low will be around 31 degrees, followed by a high in the low 50s. Sunday again start with temperatures around freezing, but afternoon highs will be a bit warmer, reaching the upper 50s, Minton said.

Atlanta’s normal high for mid-December is 54, and the normal low is 36.
