After a weekend of heat and scattered storms, North Georgia can expect much of the same Monday.
Summer officially began on Saturday, and Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brian Monahan said it certainly feels like it.
“It is summertime, and it is going to be this way pretty much through a lot of the week,” he said. “The first half of the week, you've got the hazy, humid weather and the storms.”
While there could be some fog Monday morning leftover from Sunday’s storms, Monahan said much of the region is starting the day just partly cloudy. He does not expect the storms to start firing up until after lunchtime.
Monday is likely to see a few more storms, which will make for slightly cooler temperatures. The rain chance is 60%, according to Channel 2.
Instead of 90s like the weekend, Monahan said high temperatures will be in the upper 80s Monday. Metro Atlanta is starting the day warm in the upper 60s.
“Last week our wind was coming in out of the north, and that gave us the cooler mornings,” Monahan said. “We're out of the south and west this morning, Gulf of Mexico air. That means warm and humid air. That means showers and storms.”
Monahan expects “a scattering of storms” across North Georgia by 5 p.m., and he said some showers and storms will stick around late.
“Those will settle down overnight, but tomorrow we’ve got another round of storms on the way,” he said. “Next couple of days are going to be on the stormy side.”
A cold front will trigger the rain activity Tuesday, he said. The front will push temperatures back down below average, with projected highs in the low 80s both Tuesday and Wednesday, according to Channel 2.
“We start to heat up for the end of the week and the weekend,” Monahan said.
While storms are possible this afternoon, there should be no rain during the Monday morning drive. Building volume is the only concern at 6 a.m., according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
There are no early incidents to slow down the metro Atlanta interstate system, the Traffic Center reported. Traffic is still moving fine, despite an increase in drivers on the roads.
