WEATHER-TRAFFIC UPDATE: Atlanta hits 87 degrees as congestion builds in DeKalb

Here's Severe Weather Team 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns with a look at your Monday evening forecast.

A potentially record-setting week is off to a warm start, with Monday topping out at 87 degrees.

Atlanta has dropped to 86 at 5:15 p.m., but it’s only a taste of things to come this week. The next five days should all reach 90, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Traffic heated up in DeKalb County after a crash blocked two left lanes of I-285 East near Ashford Dunwoody Road, the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center reported. While the crash has been cleared, delays linger on the interstate and Ga. 400.

A fire in the 4990 block of Fulton Industrial Boulevard at a recycling plant shut down all northbound lanes. Fulton County police said no one was hurt in the incident, but traffic is being redirected to Selig Drive.

Monday is another warm day for North Georgia, and while the average date for temperatures in the 90s is May 31, North Georgia will likely jump the gun by 10 days, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.

Atlanta started out warm with temperatures in the low 70s in town. That is about 10 degrees higher than the average low for this time of year.

A few light showers fell over the northern suburbs during the morning drive, but it did not have much impact on travel, according to Channel 2. It’s dry across North Georgia at 5:15 p.m.

A weak front moving in Monday afternoon will spread some clouds our way, Monahan said, but the rain chance is forecast to stay low all day.

“Even into the heating of the day, only about a 20 percent chance of a shower,” he said. “I’d pack an umbrella, maybe throw it in the back seat of the car just in case, but for the most part we'll be dry.”

The front falls apart Tuesday, and then Monahan said the heat really starts to build. Tuesday should start out dry and mostly sunny before some more clouds move in for the afternoon, he said.

It will be the hottest day of the year so far, according to Channel 2.

“We're going to get into the low 90s,” Monahan said. “And it only gets hotter later on this week.”

Afternoon highs are forecast in the low 90s through the end of the week. Record highs are in the mid-90s, but Monahan thinks North Georgia won’t quite make it there during the work week.

“These temperatures are just short of records, but by the weekend we have a chance to tie record highs,” he said.

Saturday’s projected high is 94, and Sunday could see a high of 95 degrees in the afternoon, according to the latest forecast.
