As the sun sets, temperatures will fall and the wind is expected to pick up after midnight, blowing in colder and dryer air, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Temperatures were 55 degrees in Atlanta, 46 in Blairsville and 56 in Griffin shortly before 6 p.m.

Overnight, temps will fall into the low 30s and metro Atlantans will wake up to a wind chill in the 20s Thursday morning.

“Despite sunshine, temperatures will only get into the low 40s,” Nitz said.

Heading into Friday it will get colder still, with temps below zero. The highest elevations in the North Georgia mountains might see a bit of freezing rain.

A 40 percent chance of precipitation could even bring a wintry mix or freezing drizzle to the northeast Georgia mountains Saturday.

Metro Atlanta won't have to worry about that. Rain, not a wintry mix, is more likely this weekend, meteorologist Karen Minton said.

There is an 80 percent chance of showers and storms Sunday.
