An approaching cold front is expected to bring occasionally heavy rain and storms with gusty winds to metro Atlanta into Thursday, along with much colder temperatures behind the front.
A flood watch has been issued for much of north Georgia, north of a line from Carrollton to Atlanta to Gainesville.
The watch, which is in effect from midnight Thursday until Thursday afternoon, affects Bartow, Carroll, Cherokee, Cobb, Dawson, DeKalb, Douglas, Fannin, Floyd, Forsyth, Gilmer, Gordon, Gwinnett, Hall, Haralson, Lumpkin, Murray, North Fulton, Paulding, Pickens, Polk, South Fulton, Towns, Union and White counties.
Most of north and central Georgia could pick up between 1.5 and 2 inches of rain through Thursday, with the highest amounts expected in the northeast corner of the state.
While severe storms are not expected, forecasters warned that a few storms could produce wind gusts up to 50 mph.
Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said the chance of rain is 100 percent through the first half of Thursday.
Friday through Sunday should be sunny but colder, with temperatures closer to normal for mid-December.
Burns said highs will be in the mid-60s Thursday, but only around 50 Friday and Saturday and in the upper 50s Sunday. Morning lows will be in the upper 50s Thursday, upper 30s Friday and low 30s over the weekend, he said.
Atlanta’s normal high for mid-December is 54, and the normal low is 36.
