Rain and flooding could put a damper on July 4th festivities, forecasters said.

“It’s going to be a wet Fourth of July,” WSB TV meteorologist Karen Minton said. “Now we won’t see the heavy stuff today, but we will be seeing it throughout the week, and especially on the Fourth of July.”

The National Weather Service has a flash flood watch going into effect Tuesday afternoon through Friday, although Minton said to expect 2 to 4 inches of rain on Tuesday.

“Your five-day forecast is showing weather really getting with it, starting tomorrow with heavy rain at times,” she said. “On Thursday … we’re looking at rain in the morning that could be heavy. Also in the afternoon … looks like even during fireworks time.”

Temperatures will hover in the 70s and low 80s, forecasters say, until Saturday when a high of 86 is expected and the chance of rain drops to only 40 percent.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
