Brace yourselves.

Sunday will be cloudy and cold, and it will get colder as the week progresses. A cold front will bring some of the lowest temps metro Atlanta has seen in a decade, said Channel 2 Action News Meteorologist Karen Minton.

After a low of 36, Sunday’s high will hit 52. “We’re looking for cold air again tomorrow morning, but it warms up during the afternoon ahead of the front,” she said. That front will bring in cold air and rain showers that will begin around 8 in the evening, Minton said.

“Past midnight is when we’re looking for the potential of frozen precipitation. “We’re looking at the possibility of icing on the roads during rush hour in the morning.”

Metro Atlanta temps won’t climb out of the 20s on Monday, said Minton. The low will be around 24.

Then Tuesday, when most of metro Atlanta children return to school after winter break, the temperatures will dip to 7 degrees. “That’s the coldest we’ve seen in about 10 years,” Minton said. “We’re not getting out of the freezing mark until Wednesday.”

Emergency responders urge people to be prepared before winter weather hits and possibly causes a loss of heat, power, gas and phone service. Winter weather kits should include flashlights, batteries, water, non-perishable food, blankets and sleeping bags, according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County fire department.
