Where family gathers on the Chattahoochee

Gaylord and Sandra Coan moved to Johns Creek, their sixth home in metro Atlanta, to be closer to their children and grandchildren. See photos of the home, which backs up to the Chattahoochee River.

Gaylord and Sandra Coan turned to Lewis Reeves Homes to build their sixth home in metro Atlanta. Gaylord Coan is the retired CEO of Goldkist and now owns Coan Millworks, which distributes high-end windows and doors.

Built in 2004, the 8,500-square-foot home in Johns Creek backs up to the Chattahoochee River.

The gently winding staircase in the foyer has been the backdrop for many a family photo.

Gaylord Coan is proud of this cherry-paneled home office featuring steep ceilings and heavy beams. His computer workstation is flanked by his rifle collection. A trumpet-shaped fixture adds to the hunting motif, playing off Gaylord's interest in quail hunting.

The Coans' great room has a cozy feel and a large bank of windows.

The keeping room off the kitchen is where Gaylord and Sandra Coan spend most of their time. It includes a dog bed for Maggie.

The combination breakfast/kitchen area is another popular room. The home includes five bedrooms and 6.5 baths, plenty of room when family comes over.

Lewis Reeves Homes of Georgia built a large island in the kitchen to create plenty of cabinet space.

Lighted display cases showcase knick knacks at the ceiling level. Sandra loves her five-burner range and automatic ice machine. "A lot of times I've got all five burners going," she said laughing.

The spacious kitchen offers room for more than one cook. Gaylord Coan enjoys roasting his own peanuts.

The dining room was freshened up by the addition of custom chair covers by designer Cindy Lites. "She went with us to pick out everything. Cindy is very talented," Sandra Coan said. The table has sentimental value because it was the "first nice piece of furniture we could afford," says Sandra Coan.

The Coans had this grandfather clock, a gift from a relative, refinished.

The spacious master bedroom is done in blue and white toile and includes a sitting area. Lites covered the existing headboard and footboard to incorporate them into the design.

The ceiling in the master bath is painted navy to tie in with the color scheme in the adjoining master suite.

The master bathroom also has plenty of cream tones and wood grain.

This sunny yellow and denim guest bedroom is on the third level of the home.

Sandra Coan calls her style traditional with a dose of French Country thrown in for good measure. Some of the home's accents come from Gaylord Coan's business trips overseas. Sandra Coan traveled with him and brought back European peasant dolls and a group of prints from London.

This green and red guest bedroom was designed with the grandsons in mind. Now those grandsons are teens, and their feet nearly hang off the beds!

This yellow, red and white room was designed for the granddaughters, the youngest of whom is 4.

Gaylord Coan's sister, Edie Mobley, started painting in her 40s. These oil paintings by Mobley hang in the Coans' great room.

The Coans used this antique highchair when their grandchildren were little.

The Coans' terrace level includes a media room, a bar, a poker table and video games. This table in the center originally served as a small animal feeder. The designer topped it with glass to create the table. The coffered ceiling with heavy wooden beams is one of the couple's favorite details.

The terrace-level kitchen and bar includes handy storage for Gaylord Coan's wine collection.
